When fitted properly, authentic MBO fold rollers are slow wearing and consistently accurate. They are engineered and developed through thousands of hours of rigorous tests; they are built to the highest possible standard. To demonstrate, we’ve highlighted some of the more important factors to consider.
Due to the very gradual curve of degradation in authentic fold rollers, operators usually won’t notice ‘til the print itself exhibits the signs: variation in the folding angle, markings on the paper, or the tell-tell grinding noise of uneven wear. Re-covering these rollers will make an improvement on the depleted roller but will never match up to the original fold quality – for very good reason:
Authentic MBO fold rollers are precision engineered from steel blanks, after application of the roller cover, the cover is ground back to form seamlessly flat rollers. This process cannot be repeated on the same roller and as such when rollers are re-covered, it is impossible to achieve the same properties as when new. Almost like re-grooving a bald tyre, you are postponing the inevitable and causing un-due stress to your folding machine – all while risking paper stock and valuable time!
Not only will re-covered rollers affect the consistency and quality of your folds, but it will also affect performance – if this isn’t something you are actively measuring, it might be costing you in extra shifts. When rollers are re-covered, the knockoff compounds cannot match the properties of the authentic MBO compound, and the sub-standard roller is now folding poorly and wearing quickly. The worse the quality becomes the slower you must fold, and the expense of the process increases.
Training on MBO’s machines gives the operator the knowledge needed to setup and optimise for each individual job – without authentic parts the machine cannot perform to its full potential and increases part failure and paper wastage. Further to this, setup & changeover times also take longer.
Also essential for a long life of folding is using the correct washing fluid for your rollers – scuffs and marks can have a job sent back, but using the wrong chemical compound will damage the gripping surface. MBO fold roller wash is available through Friedheim International in the UK
