The Isle of White based integrated design and print firm have installed the latest MBO K70 combi folder from Friedheim International. The MBO K70 was purchased not only increase capacity but to future proof the business with the intention when ready to move into SRA1 printing. With the requirement for a folder that could produce SRA1 sections as well as B2 section work, Crossprint needed a well-built and robust industrial machine that was reliable and had a good service record.

Crossprint’s new MBO K70 is an entry level B1 folder with many of MBO’s more advanced features including M1 control, combination buckle plates and the VIVAS extension

Founded in 1974, Crossprint are now part of the Newquest media group, which is in turn owned by Gannet Inc – the largest publisher in the US. Due to their unique location, Crossprint have a very diverse business community with over 1000 customers across the South of England and London ranging from local businesses to blue-chip companies.

Stuart Murray, Operations Managers at Crossprint says, “The MBO was a choice we made because of it’s size range. We currently only produce B2 however, when we make the move to SRA1 sheets, the MBO can easily handle that too, so we’re planning for the future with this installation.” The K70 is MBO’s entry level into B1 folding on the manual side, however it has many advanced features that the more advanced folders have in the range; M1 control, combination buckle plates and the VIVAS extension, which is an alternative to the conventional suction wheel/ball rail version, ensuring smooth infeed and motion. Stuart Murray continues, “Friedheim took us to see a K70 at another installation near Manchester and we were impressed with the way they conducted themselves and looked after us. The MBO itself has great build quality, and really easy for our operators to use. The training Friedheim did was over a three-day period and they didn’t leave until they were fully happy with the skill level of our operators on the machine. It’s been a pleasure to work with such a professional company.”

The MBO K70 joins an Horizon B2 folder in Crossprint’s finishing department which includes perfect binding, laminating, saddle stitching, a four clamp perfect binder and BaumannWohlenberg pile hoist and jogger combination. The press room includes a five colour Ryobi which has a lower energy consumption than other litho machines and a Ricoh Pro C751 digital press. In 2013 Crossprint were the first in the UK to achieve Ricoh’s carbon balanced status. The company had fitted 162 solar panels generating over 40.5kW and 90% of their energy outlay. Advocating the usage of recycled paper, over 36% of the paper used at Crossprint is recycled and along with using vegetable oil inks Crossprint has received an energy performance rating of “A” for it’s 400sqm plant.  The commercial printer offers both in-house litho and digital print with variable data capabilities. They also offer large-format printing, bespoke packaging and self-publishing.

The K70 is suitable for high-precision, high-performance production of folded products such as signatures and flyers in medium and high print run lengths. Even complicated folding impositions can be produced with absolute precision.

Crossprint generates 90% of its energy through solar power and its energy performance rating is “A”. Solar investment cost £75,000″In the summer we can make up to £1,700 a month. It might get to the point where we make more money from solar energy than print,” he joked.

Tom Baker, Sales Specialist for Post Press solutions says, “the K70, launched at Drupa 2016, is a machine that is based on tried and tested, reliable and robust MBO technology and adds modern features such as the M1 touchscreen control and vacuum belt infeed and sidelay. With a maximum working width of 76cm it will not only future proof Crossprint in regards to sheet size but will also allow multiple up folding of leaflets and the ability to fold sections including landscape A4. This machine is configured with a palletised feeder which will allow for quick changeover with optimum performance. We are delighted to do business with Crossprint and wish them many years of problem free folding!”
