Superior speeds up workflow with MBO Digital line

Author: SuperUser Account/Friday, April 12, 2019/Categories: Installs and Case studies

The Design, print and fulfilment company, Superior have purchased a full MBO Digital line from Friedheim International for approx. £400,000. Part of the Delta Group, Superior purchased the MBO Digital line that comprises the MBO K8RS – the fastest folder in the world in it’s class, an UW60 unwinding module, an SVC525C sheeter and an A500 stacker.

Superior's new MBO Digital line includes an MBO K8 RS Digital, UW60 unwinder, SVC 525C Sheeter and A500 Stacker

Installed at the end of January to maximise the efficiency of their Muller Martini Concepta press. The line will be cutting and sheeting approx. 2.5 million, six page leaflets every month, that are produced on the narrow web press for a major customer of theirs.

Stewart Powell production director of the 180 staffed company said, “Our priority was to get the most out of our Concepta, to get it running faster and at higher capacity. After consulting with Friedheim and explaining our requirements, they highlighted the need for a solidly built and strong line for which MBO have a great reputation for in their digital range. So, combining the printing, sheeting and cutting into one work flow was the obvious choice to go for, and we took it. Now the line has sped up our workflow by almost a third making the line a sound investment. We’re looking at a good return on investment since we purchase paper on the reel it’s both faster to fold and cheaper, so it’s a win-win either way.

“Friedheim have a reputation of great service, playing fair and providing quality machines. We’ve been happy with the way they’ve supported both the installation and the running of the machine and are pleased with our MBO Digital line.”

The MBO Digital line joins a very full plant list. Along with the Muller Martini Concepta, Superior runs a Heidelberg XL106 – 5-colour plus coater LE UV Drying press and 2 Lino Prints, as well as Inca Onset S40i and S40 flatbed printers and a range of Heidelberg finishing kit comprising folding, cutting and saddle-stitching along with a Zund cutter.

Tom Baker, Sales specialist for Friedheim said, “We are really pleased to work with such a forward-thinking company. From the start of the project the team at Superior were clear in what they wanted to achieve. Not only were we able to solve a bottleneck by bringing two processes into one but were able to offer a solution to give the customer flexibility and options. The fully automated K8RS folding unit has a maximum operating speed of 275m/min which is more than fast enough to keep up with the unwinder and sheeter at 250m/min. As a combination folding machine the K8RS will allow Superior to not only fold 4pp, 6pp and 8pp but also more complex folds and section work. The K8RS and it’s companion line has done this and has really allowed Superior to get the most out of the Muller.”
