Bringing lamination in-house to see if it's viable - UK Bookbinders own Komfi Delta 52

With over 250 years of combined experience, Weston-super-Mare based UK Bookbinders are no strangers to the UK’s print industry. Founded in 2011 the company has steadily increased the range of services it offers their customers and in late June they ordered a Komfi Delta 52 thermal laminator – it was installed in early July.

With a host of finishing equipment from sewing and guillotines to three MBO B30 folders as well as an MBO T800 folder and earlier this year added their Horizon binder and trimmer to their two existing multi station binders, UK Bookbinders specialise in the finishing of books, magazines and brochures. The majority of their customers making up the top 500 printers in the UK and one can see how being forward thinking and researching the latest finishing equipment can attract the very best of customers.

Lee Gray, General Manager says, “We were looking for our first step into a new service to enable faster turnaround for our customers and also enable us to extend a more comprehensive offering that would complement the work we already undertake.  After several months of research into what our customers would like and have a requirement for we decided that lamination was a box ticked more often than any other.”

“Following a demonstration we were impressed with its ease of set-up, versatility, build quality and small footprint.  It was paramount that a certain level of automation and user friendliness was present and when compared to other offerings this model was nominated as the most compatible with our requirements.  The B2 model was deemed the most suitable for our initial foray into this market.  We also have customers who have Komfi machines and they were very complimentary.”

The Komfi is the first laminator that UK Bookbinders have installed in a bid to lower costs and to see the benefits of bringing the process in-house.  Although the equipment wasn’t purchased for any specific contracts it was felt that adding the service will allow them to win additional contracts and attract customers who want the specialist applications that the Komfi can offer.

As ever we’ve tried to always put our customer’s needs first, with the knowledge that we aren’t just selling metal to our customers.  Lee goes on to say “Friedheim have been patient and helpful at every stage of the process offering the great service we have come to expect from them.  There is an acknowledgment that should our business require an upgrade to a B1 model at a later date then every effort would be made to make that transition as seamless as possible.  It is important to me to deal with suppliers that understand not only our existing needs but also our aspirations and are prepared to help us make those first steps without pushing us towards things we perhaps can’t justify through research alone.  You don’t need a sledgehammer to crack a nut and they understand that concept.”
